"Data Compass" Event

Applied College at Al Majardah

The "Data Compass" event was organized by the Student Activities Club at the Applied College in Al-Majardah, in collaboration with the Female Students' Affairs branch of the Deanship of Student Affairs. Held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM in the training hall, the event saw the participation of 28 female students specializing in Statistical Analysis and Data Management.
The event aimed to enhance students' skills in utilizing data, analyzing indicators, interpreting figures, comparing options, and making data-driven decisions. This was achieved through an interactive, competitive experience that linked the statistical concepts studied by the students to practical applications and real-world scenarios.
The event began with an introduction to the "Data Compass" concept, its objectives, and the competition rules. Participants were then divided into five competitive groups, with each group selecting a name that reflected its identity and competitive spirit. Choosing team names helped foster a sense of belonging and teamwork, while adding an interactive and enthusiastic atmosphere to the event.
Following the formation of the teams, the response mechanism—using A, B, and C cards—was explained. Challenges and questions were displayed on a screen, and teams were given a set time to discuss and analyze the data before raising the card representing their chosen answer. After each question, the correct answer and the method for reaching it were revealed, and points were awarded to the teams that had selected the correct answer. The challenges presented were diverse, ranging from calculating ratios and rates, comparing indicators, analyzing averages, and interpreting data, to identifying inaccurate conclusions, distinguishing between absolute numbers and rates, and understanding the difference between percentages and percentage points. They also included questions requiring critical thinking that went beyond a mere surface-level reading of the figures.
The event also featured "Summit Questions"—a set of high-level challenges designed to assess the students' ability to analyze multiple indicators simultaneously, detect misleading information, evaluate data sufficiency for decision-making, and select the most appropriate alternative based on evidence and specific criteria.
At the conclusion of the competition, the teams' total scores from the various stages were tallied and compared to determine the highest-scoring team. The competition resulted in the ranking of the top three teams, who were honored for their participation and performance.
The event provided students with an opportunity to apply their specialized skills in a competitive, interactive environment, moving beyond simply reading numbers to understanding their implications, analyzing them, and using them to reach data-driven decisions.
Furthermore, the event fostered analytical and critical thinking, as well as skills in inference, problem-solving, decision-making, teamwork, and communication. It also encouraged healthy competition among students and bridged the gap between academic theory and practical application in a stimulating and interactive manner. The "Data Compass" event is part of the efforts by the Student Activities Club at the Applied College in Al-Majardah to offer specialized programs and activities that help develop female students' skills, enhance their practical capabilities, and prepare them to apply specialized knowledge and skills in real-world situations and data-driven decision-making.
