Smart City | Innovate a Solution
The Applied College Club in Al-Majardah, in collaboration with the Deanship of Student Affairs (Student Affairs), organized the "Smart City | Innovate a Solution" event on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. Held in the "Smart Hall" under the supervision of Dr. Fabiha Fatima Mohammed, the event involved 20 female students who worked in three groups to develop their projects over a four-week period. The event aimed to enhance students' innovation and problem-solving skills while leveraging modern technologies, information systems, and data analysis to provide practical solutions for societal challenges, thereby contributing to improved quality of life and enhanced sustainability. The first group presented the "Aoun Project," which proposed a digital application designed to support small and remote communities. The app facilitates the reporting of environmental, service-related, and social issues—such as waste accumulation, the presence of stray animals, and difficulties in accessing certain health and social services. The project also outlined mechanisms for documenting, geolocating, and tracking reports, as well as the role of volunteers in providing support; furthermore, it highlighted the use of data to identify needs and priorities and to improve responses to local issues. The project secured first place thanks to its innovative concept of utilizing technology to serve the community and address daily challenges. The second group presented a project titled "Smart Cities: Innovating Urban Solutions through IoT," which explored the role of digital technologies and sensors in developing urban services and enhancing their efficiency. The project addressed smart city applications across various sectors—including transportation, traffic management, energy conservation, waste and water management, environmental monitoring, and public safety—while highlighting the vital role of information systems, data analysis, and performance indicators in supporting decision-making and achieving sustainability. Meanwhile, the third group presented a project leveraging the Internet of Things (IoT) and data analysis for the early detection of risks associated with rainwater accumulation in the city of Al-Baha. The project proposed a system that utilizes sensors to collect water-level data, integrates this information with digital systems for analysis to identify high-risk locations, and issues alerts when necessary—thereby facilitating rapid response and enhancing the safety of residents and visitors. It also explored future development potential through the integration of artificial intelligence and mapping applications. The event provided students with an opportunity to showcase their projects, discuss proposed solutions to real-world challenges, and demonstrate their ability to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical application. The projects reflected a diversity of ideas and the integration of technology, IoT, and data analysis in addressing environmental, service-related, and urban issues. Furthermore, the event helped cultivate the students' skills in presentation, communication, teamwork, and creative and critical thinking, while fostering their ability to design innovative technical solutions, promoting a spirit of healthy competition, and encouraging the application of specialized knowledge for the benefit of the community. This event is part of the Applied College Club in Al-Majardah’s efforts to support student innovation, develop technical skills, and encourage female students to present projects and ideas that help address societal challenges and improve quality of life, thereby fostering the creation of smarter, more collaborative, and sustainable communities.
